Spring has Sprung

Spring has sprung! The flowers are out in full color. The blue skies are back and the temperature is rising. Hopefully everyone had a great spring break! Below are various updates, news, tech ideas and online resources that will hopefully be useful. Thanks to those who share their ideas via email or in school visits. BRAVO!
·         Nine visiting French students arrived on April 13 and began classes Monday, April 16 at Weddington High.  French teacher, Sue Mead, coordinated the visit for students and chaperones to stay with host families and to visit various classes.  Sue was contacted by Diane Smith at East Meck who represents Terre Lingua   www.ltlhost.com
·         Michelle Ballard’s scheduled c-section went great April 9 and she is now resting comfortably at home for the rest of the semester enjoying her new daughter.
·         Marvin Ridge High welcomes a delegation of four administrators from their partner school in Nanjing, China during the week of April 23. Chinese teacher, Xiaohong HuMueller, Spanish teacher Cathy Eisner, and a host of others have been planning since September to attempt to repay the hospitality offered to the 22 UCPS teachers who taught at the Chinese summer camp in 2011. Assistant Principal Lisa Justice is coordinating a return trip this summer.

·         To Linda Juntgen, French teacher at Sun Valley High, who ended up in the hospital just days before her intended trip to take her students to Limoges, France. Students were able to travel with the second chaperone. Best wishes for a quick recovery.
·         To Sharon DePena, Spanish teacher at Piedmont High, who will be recuperating through August from damage to the disks in her back.

Professional Development
·         April 26 – Six-week online course “Teaching World Languages with Online Resources” begins. Free course offers 3 CEUs in Academic Content for renewal credit and is taught by Donna Podgorny. Work on your own 24 / 7 and / or come on Thursdays for as much time as desired from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. Email Donna Podgorny for details or to sign up.
·         July 6 – 7, 2012,8:00 am EST to 03:00 pm.TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) workshop. Presenter, Donna Tatum-Johns, is coming to Charlotte and presenting a 2-day workshop. The cost is $269 (but if it is $169 if your school is not paying). The workshop has an introduction to TPRS, a demonstration and extensive practice. Participants will practice lesson planning, circling, TPRS extended readings, reading and discussing the novels. They will also be shown grading and classroom management in a TPRS classroom. The WMS foreign language department will be attending, so there will be fellow UCPS faces. This is an awesome opportunity for those interested in learning about this method! ·         May 5, Saturday Celebration of the Battle of Puebla in Mexico when the Mexicans won the battle against the French invasions and desire to rule Mexico. Celebrated in Mexico and the US in commemoration of fighting valiantly to avoid external control.

Summer Language Camps for Students

·         A glossary of terms has been added to the Essential Standards Instructional Tools page on the Accountability and Curriculum Reform Effort (ACRE) website at http://www.ncpublicschools.org/acre/standards/support-tools/#glossary. Glossaries are available for English as a Second Language, Science, Social Studies, World Languages, Arts Education and Healthful Living. The glossaries address critical terms and definitions that are essential in building content knowledge so educators can effectively teach the new Essential Standards. Glossaries are also available for the Common Core State Standards in English/Language Arts and Math, and can be found at http://www.ncpublicschools.org/acre/standards/common-core-tools/#glossary.

Global Competency
·         There is a 15 minute videoclip with Tony Jackson of the Asia Society who summarizes what students need to know to be globally competent. He includes the need for being multilingual soon after minute 11:00. ·         Jing, by Tech Smith, is a free screen capture tool AND a screenrecording tool with audio. http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html This permits you to capture still shots to use as teaching visuals. Likewise, with Jing, you can create a video by recording audio and the images on your monitor. Add audio to Power Points, Word docs, Online website views, etc. http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html

·         iPhones have a great app Collins French English dictionary for $3.99.
·         Brainscape has ‘adaptive flashcards’. The system lets student study on their iPhone iPad, or iPod Touch using flashcard repetition pattern that is customized to each student’s pace of learning. They have apps for

Cultural & Linguistic Awareness
·         Bad Translations is a humorous video by world language teachers to highlight the importance of knowing the language and not just using a translator, of correct spelling, of cultural awareness. Your students will enjoy this two minute video clip and you will get the point across. ·         The film “Shanghai Calling” will open students’ eyes to working abroad. ·         What do African’s encounter when living in the US? Watch videoclips on sensitivity to African names, stereotypes on what African’s look like and why Africans immigrate to the US.
