GAME ON!
¡BRAVO!
·
Rosana Gonzales has been
named Teacher of the Year at the
UCPS alternative school South Providence School. Rosana teaches those students
who have not succeeded in traditional middle and high schools. She uses lots of
visuals, gestures, good pedagogy, technology, frequent comprehension checks,
behavior reinforcement, praise, encouragement and smiles to reach her students.
She stays in the target language a very high percentage of the time.
¡Felicidades! – Congratulations!
·
Tyler Vaughan has also
been named Teacher of the Year at
his school, Cuthbertson Middle where he teaches Spanish (3 preps everyday all
year long!) Tyler reaches out to other teachers at his school to do interdisciplinary
projects. He is an early adopter of technology. His students think his
classroom is very cool. He and another CMS teacher took their students to see
Book of Life, an animated new release about Day of the Dead, at the Sun Valley 14
movie theater http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2262227/

·
Picture Partners - Students work in pairs. One
student faces the screen in the front of the room and the other has their back
to it. The student that sees the pictures describes the picture in the target
language to the other student who draws what is described to them. The drawing
student is able to ask questions, but all communication must take place in the
target language. Use these visuals if you want - http://bit.ly/SpeakingPicturePartners
·
Speed Dating – for levels 1 – 6 Lower levels are very literal and need
time to prep, but upper levels get a shorter prep time and can use alter-egos
instead of their true personality. Set up the room with long tables with girls
on one side and boys on the other so they are facing each other. *Side note -
if you don't have equal numbers, make sure you choose those students that are
up for anything to be on the opposite team. http://bit.ly/SpeakingSpeedDating
·
Photography Stories -
Divide the students into different groups of 2 to 4 students. Give each group a
photograph. The photos can be of landscapes, street scenes, fammily scenes,
school scenes, news clippings, etc. Students then work together to come up with
stories about the picture. Each student creates a sentence, and the others need
to build on it. Stories might be wild but students stay in target language.

Movie Talk - How to MovieTalk Instead of a reading or a story with live actors in TPRS
methods, you use circling techniques and discuss what is visible on the screen
(NOT the dialogue). http://martinabex.com/teacher-training/movietalk
·
30 Seconds – teacher
makes up vocabulary word cards in target language. Class is divided into two or
more teams. Team A starts when person 1 has to describe what is written on the
card without using English. They don’t have to use complete sentences. If the
person describing the word, uses English or a form of the word, the other team
must catch it and they get the point. Either team can guess the word. The
team’s turn is over if they can’t guess the word in 30 seconds. Rotate teams
and person giving hints. Team with the most points wins. http://creativelanguageclass.com/2012/02/18/idea-37-30-seconds-a-circumlocution-speaking-game/
·
Left, Right, Center Dice Game – Play
the traditional dice and counters game with the goal of solidifying student’s
ability to easily say ‘to the right’ , ‘to the left’ and ‘in the middle’ so
that students can easily describe locations of objects in the classroom, in the
house, in the city, in the bedroom, etc. http://creativelanguageclass.com/2012/02/09/idea-29-shootin-dice-to-learn-location/
