Summer slides into fall. The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival steps aside for Hispanic Heritage Month. There are so many ways to bring the essence of the community into the classroom.

Events – Hispanic Heritage Month
·        Why Celebrate Hispanic Heritage? Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Month from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the histories and cultures of those whose ancestors come from Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
·        Saturday, September 24 = International Festival at UNC Charlotte The International Festival is centered around booths arranged in colorful marketplace style representing the cultures of over 50 nations. The booths are staffed by UNC Charlotte international students and members of Charlotte's international community and feature art, crafts and costumes from each participating country. ·        Saturday, October 8, 12:00 – 8:00 p.m. Festival Latinoamericano, Southpark, Headlining this year’s festival is Nicaraguan Grammy Winning Salsa singer Luis Enrique with Venezuela’s ska superstars Desorden Publico and Mexican-American Grammy Award winners, La Santa Cecilia. ·        Friday, October 28, 2016 "Latin American Fiesta" begins at 9:50 am and features a variety of traditional and contemporary dance and music from Hispanic nations of the Caribbean, Central and South America; and our Spanish show "Spain Alive" at 11:15 am showcases Tablao Flamenco, La Tuna Troubadours, and other folkloric music and dance from Spain. Early Bird Rates remain in effect for reservations placed before October 1st priced at only $15.00 per student for one show, or $20.00 for both. ·        Tuesday, October 25, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.  The World Language Essential Standards Implementation Webinar Series will begin.  These webinars are sponsored by NC DPI World Languages. ·        InterCom has a weekly customizable email digest for language teachers, which is a free service from the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) at the University of Oregon. In each week's issue they re-disseminate tagged content from listservs, blogs, the media, and other resources; subscribers receive only content that matches their subscription preferences. Their goal is to keep busy teachers in touch with the latest thinking in our field with a minimum time investment on their part. Each week they include their own original content: a feature article (Topic of the Week) dealing with a monthly theme (September's theme is literacy and cross-curricular connections; October's will be assessment as a tool for learning), an activity that exemplifies or applies the content of the feature article, and a spotlight on something that at CASLS. ·        NC Global Educator Digital Badge - This educator has successfully completed the requirements for the Global Educator Digital Badge (GEDB) per the North Carolina State Board of Education Policy TCP-H-001 / Criteria for Other Educators . This educator has demonstrated their global competence through the ability to develop or support the classroom teacher in developing their student's capacity and disposition to understand and act on issues of global significance while teaching the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Attainment of the GEDB is not an endorsement on the educator license, rather it is a reflection of the focused professional development in alignment with the educator professional development plan or goals and strategies resulting in classroom, school, or district practice as demonstrated in the Capstone Project artifact.
